Your pelvic floor muscles support the bladder, bowel and pelvic organs and work together with your core and hips. Pelvic floor physical therapy evaluates how these muscles are working and uses targeted exercise, education, hands-on techniques and habit strategies to treat urinary leakage, urgency and frequency, pelvic or tailbone pain, pain with intercourse, and pregnancy and postpartum concerns such as diastasis recti.
A 2018 Cochrane systematic review of 31 trials (Dumoulin et al.) found that women with stress urinary incontinence who completed pelvic floor muscle training were far more likely to report a cure than those who received no treatment: 56% compared with 6%, which the reviewers rated as high-quality evidence. Based on evidence like this, clinical guidelines recommend supervised pelvic floor muscle training as a first-line treatment for stress urinary incontinence in women.
Dr. Jessica Burchett has completed Herman & Wallace Level 1 pelvic rehabilitation training, and Dr. Kristine Niestrom is pursuing advanced pelvic floor education. Every visit is a private, 45-minute, one-on-one session with your therapist, so you have time to talk openly and get care built around your goals. Your therapist explains each step of the evaluation in advance, and nothing is done without your consent.

Anyone with bladder leakage when coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising, sudden urges or frequent bathroom trips, pelvic, hip or tailbone pain, pain with intercourse, or recovery needs during pregnancy and after childbirth. Your therapist will help you understand what is causing your symptoms and what to expect.
No. Many people do Kegels incorrectly, and some conditions, such as pelvic pain, involve muscles that are too tight, where more squeezing can make symptoms worse. Your therapist will assess how your muscles actually work and build a plan that may include relaxation, coordination, strengthening, breathing and posture training.
An internal assessment can provide valuable information, but it is always optional. Your therapist will explain everything before starting, and external-only evaluation and treatment options are available. You can pause or change the plan at any time.
