Schroth Method for Scoliosis in Orland Park & Westmont

What Is the Schroth Method?

The Schroth Method is a scoliosis-specific exercise approach that treats the spine in three dimensions. Instead of generic core work, you learn corrective breathing, posture and muscle activation patterns designed for your specific curve type, then practice them until they become part of your daily life. We use Schroth for children and teens with idiopathic scoliosis, often alongside bracing, and for adults managing scoliosis-related back pain or curve progression.

What the Research Shows

Schroth is one of the most studied scoliosis-specific exercise methods. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials (Dimitrijevic et al., International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health) found that Schroth exercise improved Cobb angle (the x-ray measurement of the curve), trunk rotation and quality of life compared with control groups. Results vary with age, curve size and how consistently the home program is done, so we work closely with your orthopedic physician and any bracing plan.

Why Choose Paragon for Schroth Therapy

Three of our Doctors of Physical Therapy are Schroth certified, including training through the Schroth Barcelona Institute. Every visit is a 45-minute, one-on-one session, which matters with Schroth: the method depends on precise, individualized coaching and a home program you can do correctly on your own. We treat children, teens and adults at our Orland Park and Westmont clinics and keep your physician updated on your progress.

Children, teens and adults with idiopathic scoliosis, including patients who wear a brace, are monitoring a curve with their doctor, or have scoliosis-related back pain. Your physician can help decide whether exercise, bracing or a surgical consultation is right for your curve.

No. Schroth is not a substitute for a brace when one is recommended, and no exercise program can guarantee curve correction. It is often used alongside bracing to improve posture, trunk rotation, breathing, pain and quality of life, and we coordinate with your orthopedic physician.

Most patients start with one-on-one sessions to learn their personal corrections, then visits taper as they become confident with their home program. After your evaluation, your therapist will outline a plan and timeline based on your age, curve and goals.

We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare (not Medicare Advantage) and offer competitive cash rates. Whether you need a prescription depends on your plan, so call (708) 645-4340 and we will verify your benefits for free before your first visit.
